Trauma-Sensitive Yoga

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga provides a safe place where you can begin to feel your body and breathe in relation to your trauma. Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an effective adjunctive treatment for people with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), complex, or developmental trauma. This technique was developed by David Emerson and Bessel van der Kolk at the Justice Resource Institute (JRI) in Boston, MA.

Sensitive Techniques

In this type of yoga, we invite you to tune into what’s happening in your body during the exercises. You may notice different sensations or feelings. You decide what feels right for you. You’re in charge of how you move and what you do, based on how you feel. It’s about exploring and figuring out what works best for you, without any physical assistance from us.

Body-centered Exploration

Trauma-Sensitive Movement is all about giving you choices and tuning into your body to help with healing. It’s like gently guiding you to reconnect with the here and now, and with yourself. During our sessions, we use inviting language that encourages curiosity. You’ll start noticing how making positive choices and taking action can make a difference over time.

You can reach us at support@traumasensitiveyoganederland.com. We’ll arrange a chat, either by phone or via Zoom, to talk about Trauma-Sensitive Movement and what to expect from our online sessions. This chat is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have and for us to get to know each other better.

We understand that trying something new can be daunting, especially when it comes to healing practices. We’re here to support you every step of the way and ensure you feel comfortable and safe.

Extra Important Information

No previous yoga experience is necessary. The sessions on Monday mornings, Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings are mixed sessions, meaning everyone is welcome. If you have any questions, please contact us directly at support@traumasensitiveyoganederland.com.

To ensure trauma-sensitive movement is accessible and inclusive for all survivors of complex and developmental trauma, we offer a selected number of places for participants to join our online Trauma-Sensitive Movement sessions free of charge. These places are offered on an individual needs basis for those who may be unable to pay the monthly fees or registration and are part of our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative.

Note on Terminology

We often refer to these sessions as “movement” rather than “yoga” because the word “yoga” may not feel comfortable for everyone and might set certain expectations. Our goal is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that focuses on healing through mindful movement.
